Not that far from home

My aunt arrived on a Tuesday with two suitcases and a rice cooker she refused to check as luggage. She had flown fourteen hours from a country I'd never been to, to stay in a spare room that used to be my study, and for three weeks our house rearranged itself around her presence the way a river bends around a stone it didn't ask for.

I kept catching myself translating — not language, we share that — but habit. The way she rinsed rice three times when I only rinsed it once. The way she asked after neighbours who had moved away a decade ago, as if time in Bhaktapur had simply paused the day she left it.

"Two different ways of missing it" — writing this down somewhere.
