WritingNepal Pty. Ltd ("we", "us") runs this site. This page explains what we collect, why, and what we do with it — in plain language, not legal padding.

What we collect

  • Account info: name, email, and the profile type you choose (Writer, Publisher, or Catcher).
  • Activity: what you write, rate, follow, save, and read — this is also how we calculate your Akshar balance.
  • Uploaded media: photos and videos you choose to upload — a cover photo, your avatar, or a Glimpse — are stored to display them back to you and other readers.
  • Glimpses (video posts): a Glimpse and everything attached to it — the video, its thumbnail, caption, likes, comments and view records — is permanently deleted from our servers 30 days after it's posted (it stops being shown in the Glimpses row after 24 hours). If you have WN Premium, your Glimpses are kept while your Premium is active, and deleted under the same rule 30 days after it ends. To count views fairly, we record one view per signed-in account, or per IP address for visitors who aren't signed in; IP addresses are stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form that can't be turned back into the address, and are deleted along with the Glimpse.
  • Payment info: when you pay for a Catch, payment is handled by eSewa, Khalti, or your mobile wallet provider directly. We don't store your card or wallet credentials ourselves.
  • Basic technical data: device and browser info, mainly for keeping the site working and secure.
  • How the site is used (our own statistics): which pages are visited and in what order, how long a Catch is read and how far down, how far down the Catch feed people scroll and for how long, which buttons are tapped and roughly where on the screen, whether you're on a phone or a computer, whether you've added WritingNepal to your home screen as an app (and when you open it), and whether a browser comes back on a later day. To tell visits apart, we keep a random ID in your browser — not your name or email; if you're signed in, it's linked to your account. We never record what you type. These statistics are collected by WritingNepal itself, used only to improve the site, and never shared, sold, or used for advertising.
  • WritingNepal announcements: when we send an announcement to everyone as a phone/app notification and you tap it, we note that you opened it and when — so we can see whether announcements are useful. This is kept with your account and seen only by the WritingNepal team.
  • How a Catch was written: while you write on the Write page we count, for that Catch only, how many characters were typed and how many were pasted in, how long you actively wrote, and in how many sittings — numbers only, never extra copies of your text or your keystrokes. A Catch that was mostly typed here gets a "Written here" badge, and the WritingNepal team can see these numbers (for example before paying a writing-challenge reward). If you tick "this is my own writing" before publishing, we keep that too.
  • Daily literature question: we keep the answer you choose or write for the daily question in the feed, and the date — to count your streak and Akshar. Written answers are shown to everyone with your name and photo, and others can like them. If you choose an answer without signing in, a random ID is kept in your browser (the wn_dq_v cookie) so we remember you've answered today; we store it only in a scrambled (hashed) form that can't be read back. If your account is deleted, your answers and likes are deleted too.
  • WritingNepal's own offers: if you join through a friend's invite link, we keep who invited you and whether the reward was paid, and the person who invited you gets a notification (with your name) that you joined. We also keep when and how much Akshar you got from the lucky box, cashback and top-up bonuses — so no reward is paid twice and the budgets add up. If you send a Catch to a writing challenge, we keep which Catch, when, and whether it was approved (with the reason); only the WritingNepal team sees this.
  • Akshar Pratiyogita: a competition entry is a public Catch with your name. If you tap “Remind me”, we keep you on that competition's reminder list and send you an email and a notification when it opens and when the last day is near. Tap it again any time to come off the list. Visitors without an account can ask for a reminder with just their email — it's used only for that competition's reminders and deleted when entries close.
  • Reading paid Catches: a paid Catch you've unlocked shows a faint watermark with your username and carries an invisible code with your account number, which also goes into any text you copy from it. It's used only to find out where a writer's work was shared without permission. Your own writing never carries it.
  • Saving Catches: when you save a Catch, only numbers appear — on that Catch and on the writer's profile (e.g. "Readers saved these Catches 32 times") — never who saved it. Your saved Catches stay visible only to you (unless you make them public in Settings).
  • Manuscript submissions: your name, email, manuscript file and introduction are kept privately — read only by the WritingNepal team and never shared. The manuscript file is stored encrypted in a private folder with no public link, and every time the team opens it is logged. Your email is used only to confirm and reply. Ask us here if you'd like your manuscript removed.
  • ID documents (verified badge or payouts): the citizenship, driving licence, PAN card or passport photo/PDF you send is stored encrypted, outside the public website folder — it never goes into the media library and has no public link. Only the WritingNepal admin can open it, only to check your identity, and every view is logged. It is deleted automatically once we approve or reject it; we keep only the document type and the decision. It is also deleted if your account is deleted. It is never shared or used for anything else.
  • Signing in or up with an email link: when you ask for an email link, we keep the email address, the time and your IP address — to stop misuse and to find out why an email didn't arrive. A link works once, for a few minutes. If you create an account through a link, we keep the name you typed and when you accepted the Terms.

Direct messages

Messages are end-to-end encrypted. Once both people in a conversation have set this up, we can't read what's sent — not for moderation, not for a legal request, not at all — because we don't hold the key that could decrypt it.

Setting this up gives you a one-time recovery code, which is the only way to read your messages on a new device or after clearing your browser. If that code is lost and no device still has it saved, that message history can't be recovered by anyone, including us. We can't make an exception to this — it's what makes the encryption real.

If you start over with a new recovery code, we keep your old public key. It's public by design and can't open any message on its own, but it lets the people you talked with keep reading the earlier messages on their side.

If one of your phones or browsers still holds an older key, that key is locked so only your current key can open it, and stored with us so your other devices can read those older messages too. We can't open it.

What we use it for

  • Running your account, profile, and Digital Card / Akshar balance
  • Processing Pay-Per-Post purchases and paying writers their share
  • Showing public sales rankings such as "Best-selling writers" — only a writer's name, photo, and number of sales, never the amount earned (see Terms of Use)
  • Showing you a feed and recommendations that make sense for you
  • Fixing bugs and improving the site

What we don't do

We don't sell your personal data to advertisers or third parties. We don't post on your behalf without you clicking the button yourself.

Who we share it with

Payment processors (eSewa, Khalti, mobile wallet providers) to complete purchases, and any service we use to run the site itself (like hosting, and Brevo for sending emails). That's it.

When you claim an offer or take its code, the member who made the offer sees your name, your code and — only if the offer asks for one — the proof photo you send, so they can give you the offer. When someone asks to manage an event, only our admins see what they wrote.

Only if you tap the "व्या✓" grammar check on the Write page, the selected text (or that paragraph) is sent through our server to Claude (Anthropic) to look for mistakes. We do not save that text — we only keep a count of how many checks were run. Unless you tap it, what you write is not sent anywhere.

Your writing, your rights

Anything you publish — a status update, a Catch, a book listing — stays yours. We don't claim ownership of your writing; see our Terms of Use for the full detail on content ownership.

Cookies

We use basic cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. Nothing invasive, no third-party ad tracking. Full details: Cookie Policy.

Your choices

You can edit or delete your profile information at any time from your account settings, or ask us directly by emailing the address below.

Emails from us: every newsletter or update email we send tells you how to stop them — just reply with "unsubscribe". We then stop newsletters, update emails and other bulk emails to that address and take it off our mailing list. We keep only the address and the date you asked, so we never email it again by mistake. Unsubscribing doesn't delete your account; you'll still get emails your account needs, like sign-in codes, password resets and payment receipts.
