This page explains what cookies WritingNepal uses and why — kept short on purpose, since we don't use anything invasive.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small piece of text your browser stores when you visit a site, so the site can remember something about you the next time — like staying logged in, instead of asking for your password on every page.
What we use cookies for
- Staying signed in: so you don't have to log in again every time you open the app.
- Remembering preferences: things like your notification and sound settings, light/dark theme, text size and reading settings (kept in your browser), and your language — Nepali or English — in a cookie called
wn_langthat lasts a year. - Home-screen app: if you've added WritingNepal to your home screen, your browser keeps a small note (
wnAppPing) so an app open is counted only once a day, and another (wnAppInstalled) so the "Get the app" bar can tell you to open the app instead. If you close that bar, your browser remembers it until you leave the site (wnAppBarClosed). - Basic security: verifying that requests (like sending a message or posting a Catch) are genuinely coming from you, not forged from somewhere else.
- Understanding site performance: basic, aggregated technical info to help us notice and fix problems.
- Our own site statistics: a random visitor ID kept in your browser's local storage (so we can count visits and returning visitors without knowing who you are), the pages of your current visit kept for that browser tab only, and a short-lived cookie (
wn_walk_evt, about 10 minutes) that notes moments like "signed up" so our page-flow statistics are accurate. All of this is first-party — it stays with WritingNepal. - Nepali spell check: whether the check on the Write page is on or off, and any words you chose to "Add to my words", are kept in your own browser (
wnNscOn,wnNscMine, and that you agreed to the grammar check notice (wnNgOk)). The text you write is never sent anywhere for this check. - Remembering what you closed: if you close one of our small "WritingNepal बारे" cards in the feed, your browser remembers that for 14 days so it doesn't come straight back. It also remembers if you said "Not now" to turning on notifications in the app — we only ask again after a week, and at most 3 times. If you tick "don't show again" on the check before publishing a Catch, it remembers that too (along with your "this is my own writing" promise), and the word goal you set in focus mode.
- Daily literature question: if you answer the daily question in the feed without signing in, a cookie called
wn_dq_v(a random ID, kept for a year) remembers that you've answered today. It doesn't contain your name or email. - Invite links: if you arrive through someone's invite link (
?ref=), a cookie calledwn_refkeeps who invited you (their username) for 30 days, so you both get Akshar if you sign up. It's removed once your account is created. - Promo links: if you arrive through a WritingNepal Facebook post or a member's share-kit link (
?wnp=), a cookie calledwn_promokeeps that link for 7 days so a sign-up can be counted for it, and your browser keeps a small note (wnRefSeen_…) so a visit is counted only once a day. Neither holds your name.
What we don't do
We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. We don't sell cookie data to anyone. Nothing here follows you around the rest of the internet.
Third-party cookies
A few features rely on outside services that may set their own cookies when you use them — for example, signing in with Google or Facebook. Those cookies are controlled by Google/Facebook's own policies, not ours.
Controlling cookies
Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Blocking essential cookies (like the ones that keep you signed in) means some parts of WritingNepal — like staying logged in — won't work properly.
